He was encouraged by colleague professors and audience to concentrate to writing art songs as they were rapidly recognized as lyrical and dramatic, and melodically well accompanying the verses of these great poets.

As part of the anthology "Dela naših muzičkih stvaralaca komponovana na stihove Desanke Maksimović" (eng. "The works of our musical creators composed to the lyrics of Desanka Maksimovic", prof.
Vladimir Jovanovic said: "Prof. Jovanovic wrote the largest number of compositions based on the poetry D. Maksimović: 21 songs for voice unaccompanied, 19 for voice and piano, 13 songs for children, children's story “Medvedova ženidba” (eng. “The Bear marriage”) for eight soloists and chamber orchestra".

In the first decade of creative work he wrote several virtuosic pieces for stringed instruments, and shorter pieces for piano, dedicated to educational work with children.
